Animation Experiments
I had the urge to do some "analog" animation, but since a pure analog workflow is impractical it was mostly analog in spirit. The process involved printing animations on some kind of paper, shooting the frames with a 2001 Sony Cybershot DSC-S85 digital camera (thanks David!), then dumping the images into my workstaion, aligning the frames, sequencing them, and exporting out to video. It was a lot of work for little pay off, but I like what I did.
Yars' Revenge
I captured a clip of me playing Yars' Revenge (one of my favorite Atari 2600 games), edited the colors to save ink, and printed the frames on address labels. There was some kind of glitch where the images would partially print in green so I decided to change color intentionally for some parts. The set pieces for the video are courtesy of my man Gene.
Bird Kaiju
This loop was drawn in Krita, exported as individual frames, printed individually from a template I made in Inkscape onto transparent label paper, and stuck onto a plank of wood to get the noisy background texture. The color and exposure wasn't right so I made it black & white and I think it looks really cool that way. (GIF version above)
Fish Kaiju
This loop was drawn in Krita, exported as individual frames, printed individually from a template I made in Inkscape onto blue paper, then shot with a flashlight illuminating the subject from behind. There was some color clipping in some of the photographs so I chose to colorize the final images. (GIF version above)
Space Invaders
I had the idea of doing time lapse photography mixed with cell animation. I printed Space Invaders sprites on inkjet transparencies, then placed them consecutively in a specifically designed 3D printed frame that attaches to a digital camera. The music I made for this is pretty cool too.
VJ Experimentation
I've gone from DJ to VJ and been doing more live video manipulation lately. Right now I'm using OBS Studio for performance, but behind the scenes is an analog workflow that includes a Panasonic camcorder, VHS player, Videonics MX-1 video mixer, and some easy to circut bend gadgets. There are many possible VJ paths and I'm following the one with least resistance. Below is a tiny sample of my efforts.
VGA Feedback Generator
I built a version of the LoFi Future feedback generator, housed in a VHS case. It's great, I made dozens of feedback clips with this thing. So thankful for LoFi Future!
Dirty Mixer
It seems like a rite of passage to make a Karl Klomp dirty video mixer so I made one. I plan to use it a lot more in the future.
Cloud Tank
I've been a fan of practical effects my whole life. One day I built a cloud tank in my kitchen. I made dozens of fairly long clips, here is a low-res loop of one.
